Notes

1 I carried out an extensive survey of contemporary guidebooks to Agra and the Taj available in the UK. The point made here, and those to follow on the themes by which the Taj has been and continues to be narrated, are echoed in virtually all these books but space precludes a more extensive selection. The guidebooks I reviewed are Alexander’s Delhi and Agra: A Traveller’s Companion; Shearer’s The Traveller’s Guide to Northern India; The Collins Illustrated Guide to Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, The Cadogan Guide to India; Nelles Guide to Northern India; The Lonely Planet’s India: A Travel Survival Kit; The Berlitz Pocket Guide to India; T.Sendour’s Introduction to India; Insight Guide to India; and Fodor’s India.

2 Pal identifies and illustrates many of the ways in which Western artists, writers and photographers have depicted the Taj in the final chapter of his edited volume (1989).
